Small Objects Big Protest: Everyday objects infused with messages of protest

When Protest and Daily Life Converge

When you think about protest what comes to mind?

Is it large events such as marches and sit-ins with people rallying together holding placards?

While you would be correct in thinking of such things, what is less acknowledged are other subtle and savvy ways that individuals or groups can utilise everyday objects to express their views and generate conversation about important issues. Creativity is vast when people stand up for causes they believe in.

Considering protest and the ways this can be displayed enables us to reflect on our past and contemplate how our futures can be shaped by items we may normally overlook. What becomes clear is that politics is often wrapped up in the everyday, and objects possess the power to unite us in solidarity and help pave the way for a better world.

This exhibition presents items spanning from circa.1766- the present day, demonstrating the way objects can be altered, produced, or used to take on roles and meanings alongside their obvious purpose.
