Preface:
From Witch Trials to Millennium…
This online exhibition explores the history of women’s health in the UK. Focusing on challenges women have faced within male-dominated laws and medical systems. From the witch trials to modern medicine, women’s access to healthcare has shifted as the society changes. This exhibition takes you back to four key periods: late 16th century, the Victorian era, the Mid-20th Century, and the Millennium, when the significant social change and technological revolution occurred.
During the exhibition, four women from each period will guide you through this journey. With their assistance, you will explore objects that tell their stories and gain insights into how shifting politics and social changes have shaped healthcare access over time. These stories are not isolated, they reflect the collective experience of women across generations.
The debate for women’s healthcare remains ongoing. It is no surprise that even though this issue is often considered resolved, there still are problems deeply embedded with women’s health today. We invite you to this exhibition, where you will uncover how historical biases and political struggles still impact reproductive rights, mental health, and bodily autonomy today.
As you journey through these stories, take a moment to ask yourself: What should women’s health look like tomorrow, and how can we work together to make it a reality?
